Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn Officially Invited To Become King
During a meeting this morning, Thailand’s National Legislative Assembly has agreed to formally invite Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn, heir to the Thai throne, to become the country’s King.
The President of the NLA, Pornpetch Wichitcholchai, confirmed the news during the televised meeting, saying “I will invite Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn to ascend the throne and become the new King for all Thai people… All members (of the National Legislative Assembly), on this auspicious occasion, I ask you to stand and offer your praise to the new king”. King Bhumibol Adulyadej, Rama IX and the King of Thailand since 1946, died on October 13.
It is believed the Crown Prince – who is due to return to Thailand this week from Germany – will have an audience with officials on Thursday where he will officially be asked to take the throne and become Rama X. A coronation ceremony, however, will not take place until next year, once the cremation of King Bhumibol has taken place.
