Prince Harry’s Caribbean Tour: Day Seven – St Vincent and the Grenadines

Day seven of his Caribbean tour, the half-way point of the trip, saw Prince Harry head to St Vincent and the Grenadines.

After being welcomed by the realm’s Governor-General, Sir Frederick Ballantyne, Harry’s first stop of the day was to the Kingstown Botanical Gardens where he was given a tour of the Gardens, which are the oldest tropical garden in the world. Among the floral and fauna  he saw were some Vincy Parrots – one of whom attempted to bite his finger when he held it up to the cage during a chorus of “hellos”. The Prince also planted a Baobab tree to mark the occasion, after watching a cultural music performance by local schoolchildren.

Prince Harry then walked the Vermont Nature Trail to the dedication point of St Vincent and the Grenadines’ contribution to the Queen’s Commonwealth Canopy (and enjoying a drink of coconut water on the walk).

Before heading to his next engagement, Harry spent some unscheduled time in the Vermont village, meeting locals.

It was afterwards off to Colonarie Beach to learn about the conservation work going on there to protect, amongst other creature, turtles. The beach has recently been made a ‘protected turtle nesting habitat’ and is being used to help educate the community on the reasons and benefits of conservation. Children from the local school joined Harry to tell him about the studies they are doing about protecting endangered species.

The day concluded with a reception with Governor-General Ballantyne and Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves, during which Prince Harry presented Duke of Edinburgh’s Awards Gold Awards to participants from the country.
