Kensington Palace Confirms Prince Harry-Meghan Markle Relationship
In an unprecedented statement, Kensington Palace has confirmed the relationship between Prince Harry and American actress Meghan Markle while calling for the media to ease away from the story as the Prince is concerned for her safety.
Saying that while he is aware of the public interest in his private life, Prince Harry feels the line was crossed in recent days and that “it is not right that a few months into a relationship with him that Ms Markle should be subjected to such a storm.” Referring to the actress as “his girlfriend”, the statement also says how Harry has been “deeply disappointed” by his inability to protect her from the media, some of whom have gone to extreme lengths to gather an exclusive in the biggest royal story of the year.
News of the relationship was first broken by Camilla Tominey of the Sunday Express last Sunday. Since then, each day has brought an avalanche of stories and reports detailing how Ms Markle – who is currently staring in the television series Suits – and Prince Harry met, when they have seen each other and, the main point of contention of the official statement, every aspect of Ms Markle’s background, family and work history.
Prince Harry “hopes that those in the press who have been driving this story can pause and reflect before any further damage is done”. How the story – and the media – proceeds from here will hopefully be with a calmer, cooler head.
