Today at the Odense City Hall, the Hans Christian Andersen Literature Award for 2016 was presented to Haruki Murakami by Crown Princess Mary.

During the ceremony, Mr Murakami – a Japanese writer whose works have been translated into 50 languages and are both Japanese and international best sellers – was presented with a bronze ‘Ugly Duckling’ sculpture, a diploma and a cheque for 500,000DKK that make up the prize for the award.

The committee deciding this year’s laureate described Mr Murakami’s work as an “imaginative prose [that] embodies a global view and a narrative zest that has parallels in the writing of Hans Christian Andersen.” The award is given to writers whose style of work can be linked to Hans Christian Andersen.
