Prince Albert II of Monaco has paid a visit to Russia today to mark the tenth anniversary of renewed diplomatic relations between the two countries. He and President Vladimir Putin had an audience at the Kremlin, ahead of opening an exhibition on the two countries’ history with each other.

“The Romanovs and the Grimaldis: Three Centuries of History” is being run at the State Tretyakov Gallery as part of the Days of Monaco in Russia cultural program. Approximately 200 items are part of the exhibition, which highlights the close ties between the Russian and Monegasque ruling families, loaned from the Prince’s Palace of Monaco archives and library, the State Archive of the Russian Federation and several Russian museums.

Among the items is the 1895 Fabergé Blue Serpent Clock Egg that was gifted to Tsarina Maria Feodorovna, and was eventually purchased by Prince Rainier III of Monaco for his wife Grace.

Both leaders gave speeches at the opening, speaking of the importance of the cultural programs being held to continue strengthening Monaco-Russia relations.
