Spain’s Olympic and Paralympic Medalists Attend Reception at the Royal Palace of El Pardo
King Felipe and Queen Letizia today hosted a reception at the Royal Palace of El Pardo for the Spanish medalists from the recent Olympic and Paralympic Games in Rio. Infanta Elena, who is Honorary President of the Spanish Paralympic Committee, was also present.
The royals personally greeted all of the athletes, who won 17 Olympic and 31 Paralympic medals; posing for photos with many of them.
The King gave a brief speech during the reception, in which he praised and congratulated the team’s efforts, and spoke of his – and the country’s – pride in the athletes: “A pride that goes beyond the tangible successes and medals – I refer to the example you have given us all, without exception, and that you transit to our society, which is based on the best values of Olympism: the pursuit of excellent and trump from honest and fair play; competitiveness always accompanied by respect for the adversary rivalry but never enmity; knowing how to win and how to lose with greatness and humility; and finally, how to fight shoulder-to-shoulder for the success of your team.”
