London, Here She Comes! Sophie Wessex Kicks Off DoE Award Bike Ride
The Countess of Wessex has this morning departed from the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh on a 716km bike ride to Buckingham Palace as her Duke of Edinburgh Award Diamond Challenge to mark the 60th anniversary of the organisation.
Prince Philip, who started the scheme back in 1956, and Prince Edward were on hand at the Palace to see off Sophie and her team of six fellow riders, who are from the military regiments she is linked to, as they began their week-long journey south.
Sophie admitted to being “very nervous” about the “pretty daunting” 716km ride that was to come this morning ahead of the start. She also said that her father-in-law first thought her “mad” for her challenge choice.
The Countess has to date raised over £94,000 for the Duke of Edinburgh Award via her Diamond Challenge.
