Queen Máxima Learns About Aquaculture Industry During Visit to Zeeland
The Queen of the Netherlands paid a visit to the provence of Zeeland today, where she stopped in the towns of Colijnsplaat and Zierikzee with a focus on the innovations put to use in the region’s aqua farming industry.
First she visited Delta Farms, a company that farms and exports sea centipedes to shrimp farms around the world. New research is being undertaken to see if the creatures can extend the lifespan of human organs for transplantation.

It was then aboard a ship used for collecting mussels from the seabeds around the area, during which Queen Máxima spoke with the ship’s captain and others involved in the collection about new methods used to protect the seabed from being damaged during collection.
Her final engagement in Zeeland was at the Pontes Pieter Zeeman College where Maxima – who was wearing a peach coloured dress with a beige cardigan – met students from the Zilte Academie Zeeland that teaches how to cook the seafood farmed in the region. The Queen also got the chance to take part in some oyster shucking, a task which was not as easy as it first seemed!
