Frederik and Mary Visit Danish Minority in Flensburg

On May 6th, Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary visited the town of Flensburg in the state of Schleswig-Holstein, just below the Danish-German border. The aim of the royal couple’s visit was to visit the Danish minority living in the city.

Spending five hours in Flensburg, Frederik and Mary began their visit at the Town Hall where hundreds of school-children waited outside waving Danish flags. Schleswig-Holstein’s Prime Minister Peter Carstensen, who met with the Crown Prince in March, and Flensburg’s Lord Mayor Klaus Tscheuschner greeted the couple, before the Crown Princely Couple signed the official town guest book.

Also at the Town Hall, the Prince and Princess were presented with two signed jerseys of the Flensburg handball team in the Toyota Handball-Bundesliga (Toyota Handball Federal League), SG Flensburg-Handewitt, for their children Prince Christian and Princess Isabella.

The royal pair then visited two Danish education facilities, the Duborg-Skolen Secondary School and the Skovgades Børnehave kindergarten, where again they were greeted with seas of waving Danish flags. Several songs and speeches later, Frederik and Mary were quizzed by the youngsters at the kindergarten, who wanted to know if Frederik knew how to ride a skateboard – “Yes, of course!” – and if Mary cooked – “I like to bake with my children”.

The final stop on the whirl-wind visit was to the Danish Helligåndskirken (Danish Church) in Flensburg. Inside the church, the choir sang several songs including “Our Father”. The Crown Princess sang along quitely with each song.
