Queen Sofia Watches On As Mother Teresa Becomes A Saint

Yesterday, Queen Sofia of Spain was one of thousands packed into St Peter’s Square in the Vatican for the canonisation of Mother Teresa. The process of canonisation was begun under Pope John Paul II shortly after the nun’s death in 1997, and the final stage – a second recognised miracle – was approved in December 2015 by the current Pope, Francis.

Prior to the solemn mass of canonisation, the Queen briefly met with Pope Francis inside the Vatican.

Queen Sofia met Mother Teresa on several occasions, and attended her funeral in 1997. The Queen Sofia Foundation contributes to the work done by the Missionaries of Charity, which was started by the new Saint, within Spain.
