The 6th Duke of Westminster, Gerald Grosvenor, passed away suddenly today, a spokesperson for the family confirmed. He was 64.

The Duke had become ill at his estate Abbeystead House in Lancashire and was taken to the Royal Preston Hospital, where he passed away. “His family are all aware and they ask for privacy and understanding at this very difficult time,” the spokesperson said.

Born in December 1951, Gerald became the Duke of Westminster in 1979 upon the death of his father and became one of Britain’s wealthiest men. He is survived by his wife, Natalia, their four children (Tamara, Edwina, Hugh – the new Duke – and Viola), and four grandchildren.

Spokespeople for the royal family also made statements, saying the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh had sent a private message of condolence, while the Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall were “deeply shocked and greatly saddened” by the news. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge also expressed their sadness at the Duke’s passing.
