Let The Games Begin! Rio Olympics Kick Off With Colourful Opening Ceremony
The Opening Ceremony of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games has gone off in a sea of colour at the Maracanã Stadium in Rio de Janeiro, with several royals in attendance cheering on their country’s athletes as they entered the stadium.
Showcasing Brazil’s long and diverse history, the ceremony took the audience on a journey of the country’s development, with large amounts of the music and colour that Brazil is known globally for. Themes of peace and protecting the environment carried through, as the athletes planted seeds of 207 native Brazilian plants into pots of soil that will be transplanted after the Games to help replenish the tree environment.
Among the royals present this evening were King Philippe and Queen Mathilde of the Belgians, Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary of Denmark, King Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands, Grand Duke Henri of Luxembourg and Prince Albert II of Monaco.
