The first Olympics of the new millennium were held in Sydney, Australia and several royals made the trek “Down Under” for the event (one even managed to find a wife – while another’s was in the pool!).

Vamos!: Prince Felipe cheers on Spain’s men’s handball team during a match against Sweden. Also present are Queen Sofia, a pregnant Infanta Cristina and her eldest son Juan (starring wide-eyed at his uncle’s antics) – her husband Iñaki Urdangarín was on the court (the Spanish team came home with a bronze medal). You can see King Carl Gustaf and Queen Silvia of Sweden in the row behind.

Crown Prince Frederik and Prince Joachim of Denmark at the women’s handball match between Denmark and Brazil. Frederik would meet his future wife, Mary Donaldson, at a Sydney bar during the Games.

Jordan’s Princess Haya competes in the show jumping.

Princess Anne watches the final of the Three-Day Team Event.

King Carl Gustaf and Queen Silvia with Swedish gold medalist in men’s wrestling 97kg, Mikael Ljungberg.

Prince Albert of Monaco watches the swimming competition from the stands…

…while his future Princess, South African Charlene Wittstock, is in the water in the women’s 200m backstroke heats.
