30 Years of the National Osteoporosis Society Celebrated at Clarence House
As President of the National Osteoporosis Society, the Duchess of Cornwall has hosted a garden party at Clarence House to celebrate the organisation’s 30th anniversary. However, typical British weather threw a spanner into the works, with a rainy day forcing the event to be moved indoors.
Among the guests attending were Downton Abbey creator Julian Fellows, actress Miriam Margolyes, the Duchess’s children Tom and Laura, her sister Annabel Elliott, and Lady Sarah Chatto, as well as NOS volunteers.
Camilla spoke of her personal connection with osteoporosis and the reason behind her long-term commitment to the NOS: “I became involved [with this charity] in 1994 after watching my mother stoically suffering the appalling pain and ignominy of this devastating disease, which in the end resulted in her early death at the age of 72.
“I was determined, for my mama’s sake, to find out more and to find a way of helping others avoid the same excruciating pain and disregard that she, and many of her generation encountered…It is estimated that about three million people in the UK have osteoporosis…I can only hope and pray that, with your help, the next thirty years will find a cure for osteoporosis, so that future generations will be spared its ravages,” she said.
The Duchess also said that it was a “tremendous honour” for her to be involved with the NOS and the work that it does to improve awareness of osteoporosis.
Both the Duchess’ mother, Rosalind Cubitt, and her grandmother Sonia Keppel died after long battles with osteoporosis. Camilla has been President of the NOS since 2001, and was patron from 1997 to 2001 before that.
