Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip have continued their visit to Northern Ireland, visiting Giant’s Causeway, Bushmills and Bellarena.

They began the day at the UNESCO World Heritage site, the Giant’s Causeway, in County Antrim. After stopping at the Causeway Visitor Centre to see some exhibits and meet with staff, the Queen and the Duke then headed over to the actual site, which was formed by an ancient volcanic eruption.

It was then a short trip down to Bushmills for the official unveiling of a statue of World War One soldier Sergeant Robert Quigg, who was awarded the Victoria Cross for his bravery during the 1916 Battle of the Somme. The Queen – wearing a grass green coat and matching hat – recalled how she met Sergeant Quigg in 1953 during her first visit to Northern Ireland as Queen. Prince Philip also unveiled a commemorative stone.

The final engagement of the day was the opening of the Bellarena Railway Station.
