The Duchess of Gloucester Celebrates 70th Birthday
Today the Duchess of Gloucester, one of the British Royal Family’s quietest achievers, celebrates her seventieth birthday. She was born as Birgitte Eva Henriksen in Odense, Denmark.
She attended school in Denmark before going on to study in Switzerland and England, where she met her future husband, Prince Richard of Gloucester, while at Cambridge. After completing her university studies in Copenhagen, Birgitte worked at the Danish Embassy in London from 1971.
Her engagement to Prince Richard was announced in February 1972, the couple were married that July and have three children: the Earl of Ulster, Lady Davina Lewis and Lady Rose Gilman.
The Duchess has actively worked for the royal family for many years, and is patron of over 60 organisations.
