His Majesty King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck of Bhutan today performed a “ground-breaking ceremony” (Sa-Lhang Tendrel) for the Jigme Singye Wangchuck School of Law at Pangbisa in Paro, west of Thimphu.  It will be the first School of Law in the country.

Sa-Lhang Tendril is a cultural tradition in Bhutan and takes place before any construction work is undertaken. The Bhutanese have an ancient belief that the land is possessed by spirits and deities and therefore, a special ritual is performed to symbolically obtain the permission of the spirits to use the land.

Her Royal Highness Princess Sonam Dechan Wangchuck is the president of the school and took part in the events alongside the Prime Minister, Governmental officials and donors of the new school.
