On This Day: Wedding of King Hussein and Princess Muna
On this day in 1961, the late King Hussein got married to Princess Muna (née Antoinette Avril Gardiner) in Amman. Jordan’s King had been married before to Princess Dina, with whom he had a daughter, Princess Alia.
The royal wedding took place at Zahran Palace. Days before, Muna, who was born in England, converted to Islam and took the name of Muna Al Hussein. On the morning of the wedding, they celebrated the nikah, which was attended by male members of both families. During the ceremony the King and Princess Muna signed the contract marriage.
Later the newly married couple made a procession through streets of Amman. The Princess wore a western white bridal gown, a long veil and a diamond necklace gifted by King Hussein. The party also took place at Zahran Palace and was attended by members of the royal family, Princess Muna’s family and the government.
