Spanish Monarchs Attend ‘King’s Cup’ Amidst Flag Controversy

King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia of Spain attended the final of the Copa del Rey (King’s Cup) or as it is officially called: Campeonato de España – Copa de Su Majestad el Rey. The football cup was founded in 1903 and is the oldest of Spain. The Spanish monarchs went to the Vincente Calderon Stadium in Madrid to see the match between FC Barcelona and FC Sevilla.

Before the match started, it was dominated by a soap opera around a flag. The Spanish government forbade the use of Catalan seperatist flags at the final. Police agents supposedly were instructed to search FC Barcelona supporters to find hidden flags. Friday however a Spanish judge decided that the ban on the flag is illegal.

The king and queen were not the only Spanish royals at a sports event today. Infanta Elena, Duchess of Lugo presided over the King’s Cup horse riding competition of the Longines Global Champions Tour taking place at the Country Club in Madrid today.
