Prince Georg Friedrich and Other German Royals Celebrate Horse Racing Jubilee in Magdeburg
The Magdeburg Horse Racing Club celebrated its 110th anniversary today. To mark the occassion the mayor of Magdeburg invited Prince Georg Friedrich of Prussia, Prince Eduard of Anhalt, his sister Edda Darboven, née Princess of Anhalt, the count von der Schulenburg, count vom Hagen, Felix von Nathusius, a representative of the princely house of Stolberg-Wernigerode and other guests that are descendants of founding – or early members of the Association.
The race course Magdeburg developed already in the first years of its existence into one of the most important racetracks in the German Empire and the Weimar Republic. With the Second World War and afterwards, it lost its importance. After reunification dedicated racing friends got together and founded in 1990 new racing club.
Over the past 26 years there have been ups and downs. The city of Magdeburg was twice badly hit by floods. The restorations after the flood of 2013 have only been finished this year due to a newly built racetrack that is flood-proof.
