Máxima is Elegant in Navy as She Baptises New Cruise Ship

The Queen of the Netherlands wore a simple, yet stunning navy outfit today as she baptised the new cruise ship of the Holland America Line, ms Koningsdam.

Máxima was given the honour of baptising the ship – which can hold over 2,000 passengers with a crew of 1,000 – at the Wilhelmina port in Rotterdam. She poured a glass of champagne over the ship’s bell as a blessing during the dedication ceremony on the Lido pool deck.

She then went on to undertake the traditional breaking of a bottle of champagne on the ship’s hull – but this was done via a large decorative rope inside the ship that sent the bottle flying outside (and giving the Queen’s large brimmed hat a good whacking as the rope went up!). “May God bless this ship and all its crew,” Máxima said as she pulled the rope.

The cruise ship is named after King Willem-Alexander, and is the second ship Queen Máxima has named for the Holland America Line: back in 2010, she baptised the ms Nieuw Amsterdam.
