King Carl Gustaf’s 70th Birthday: Concert at the Nordic Museum

As part of his 70th birthday celebrations, King Carl Gustaf was honoured with a concert performed by the Royal Opera and the Stockholm Concert Hall at the Nordic Museum.

The King and Queen arrived in a horse-drawn carriage, while the other guests – family, friends and small number of foreign royals – arrived by car.

During the event, both King Carl Gustaf and Crown Princess Victoria – who was looking fabulous in a dramatic bronze jacquard full skirt and black blouse from H&M’s Conscious Collection – gave speeches.

The King used the moment to thank his people for all their support and good-wishes over the course of his life, and that what has struck him and Queen Silvia the most recently was “all these enthusiastic people we get to meet, who in one way or another are involved in enriching Sweden in many areas.”

In her speech, Victoria spoke of her father’s loyalty and duty to his country, and how the continuous nature of the monarchy has influenced him: “Your motto ‘For Sweden – With the Times’ says it all about your attitude to your acquisitions and to the inheritance you have to manage. But you not only manage, you nature and you further develop with respect for traditions.”

She also added in some personal remarks, referencing the King’s own words after the 2004 tsunami disaster where he said he knew what it meant to not have a dad, saying that she “knows what it means to have a father. A father who serves as a role model and supporter. Upright and experienced, you are a source of peace and security, trust and warmth.”
