Look Back: King Carl XVI Gustaf’s 40th Birthday

While the Swedish king is looking forward to celebrate his 70th birthday in great style on saturday, it may be a nice moment to look back at his previous round birthdays.

The first time the king celebrated his birthday in a big way was on April 30th 1986. Below is a group photo from the birthday party. The king and Queen of Sweden are flanked by king Olav V of Norway and former Queen Juliana of The Netherlands – both godparents to the king. Behind them you can see Queen Fabiola of the Belgians, Queen Sofia of Spain, Queen Margrethe II of Denmark and Prince Bernhard of The Netherlands. On the 3rd row : King Baudouin of The Belgians, King Juan Carlos I of Spain, Princess Lilian of Sweden, and Prince Hendrik of Denmark. The 4th row: Walter Sommerlath, father of Queen Silvia, Don Alfonso de Bórbon, Duke of Cádiz, Prince Bertil of Sweden, Grand Duchess Josephine-Charlotte of Luxembourg, Grand Duke Henri of Luxembourg, Crown Princess Sonja and Crown Prince Harald of Norway. On the 5th row: the Hereditar Princess Marie and Hereditary Prince Hans Adam of Liechtenstein, Princess Benedikte of Denmark, Prince Richard of Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg. Behind prince Richard may be Alice Sommerlath.In the back you can recognise the kings sisters and their husbands, prince Leopold of Bavaria and behind princess Benedikte are Hereditary Grand Duchess Maria Teresa and Hereditary Grand Duke Henri of Luxembourg.
