Birthday Girl Queen Elizabeth Lights Birthday Beacon
Watched on by the Duke of Edinburgh, the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall, Queen Elizabeth this afternoon lit the first of over 900 beacons as part of her 90th birthday celebrations.
The beacons were lit around the country and the Commonwealth afterwards, with a beacon on each of the highest points in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
The Prince of Wales, who will be hosting a private dinner at Windsor Castle this evening, gave a brief speech prior to the lighting, in which he said – with a smile – “I suddenly realised the other day that I have known you since you were 22 years old.”
He also said that the beacons were “represent the love and affection with which you are held throughout this country and the Commonwealth.”
