Denmark’s two leading Princesses were more like twins this evening as they attended a gala banquet hosted by Queen Margrethe for the visiting President of Mexico, Enrique Peña Nieto.

Crown Princess Mary wore a red chiffon gown with a tiered skirt from Jesper Høvring and her new antique diamond tiara, while Princess Marie also went for red and diamonds – her floral diamond wedding tiara and a simple red evening dress with a embroidered lace bodice.

Both women also wore the yellow sash of the Order of the Aztec Eagle, Mexico’s highest honour given to foreigners (Crown Prince Frederik and Prince Joachim also received the order).

Queen Margrethe wore a repeated navy blue evening gown with an embroidered white cover over the bodice. The First Lady of Mexico, Angélica Rivera, also chose a navy gown with sheer sleeves that offset her new Order of the Dannebrog sash.

Earlier in the afternoon, the Presidential Couple were welcomed by the entire Danish Royal Family at Copenhagen International Airport. Queen Margrethe and President Peña Nieto inspected a military guard of honour, before the official party headed off to Fredensborg Palace for official photographs.

Later, Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary accompanied President Peña Nieto and Mrs Rivera to a visit of Kronborg Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage Site dating back to the 1420s (and the scene of Shakespeare’s Hamlet).

They then paid a visit to the M/S Museum of Maritime. The two ladies opted for simple outfits in bold colours and prints: the First Lady in a lovely green shift dress with a camel coloured overcoat, while Crown Princess Mary recycled a black and white ombre coat first worn earlier this year in Saudi Arabia.
