Windsor Castle and Palace of Holyroodhouse To Get £37Million Renovations

A £37million renovation project will see numerous works undertaken at Windsor Castle in Berkshire and the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh. The funding comes entirely from the Royal Collection Trust.

£27million will be spent on Windsor Castle, which will boast a new visitors centre and a learning centre for schoolchildren once the renovations are completed at the end of 2018. It will also receive its first visitor’s cafe, to be added to the medieval undercroft.

A few changes will also be made to the access visitors have to the inside of the Castle – the number of ground floor state apartments on the tour will be expanded, and the original entrance hall will be reinstated.

The remaining £10million will go towards developing the outdoor spaces at the Holyroodhouse, including Holyrood Abbey.  The Palace will also receive a learning centre, like Windsor Castle.

The purpose of the renovations is to allow “greater public access” to the residences. The Royal Collection Trust’s director, Jonathan Marsden, said that the Trust “wants everybody to have a proper sense of arrival, to be able to make choices about how they go about their visits. We will interpret the palaces and collections in new ways, open up new spaces to the public and we’re going to create two purpose-built learning centres.”

Works are expected to start in early 2017.
