Prince Harry Completes Official Visit to Nepal, Will Stay 6 More Days in Private Capacity

Prince Harry was back in Kathmandu today where he officially opened the Nepal Girl Summit alongside President Bidyha Bhandari. The summit’s purpose is to promote the rights of girls, particularly in developing countries.

“We need to acknowledge that so many countries and cultures are failing to protect the opportunities of young women and girls in the way they do for boys. Improved access to education can transform lives, families, communities and ultimately entire countries,” he said in his speech, going on to use Nepal as an example for female role models: “Female leadership in Nepal now sets a powerful example, with women occupying the roles of President and Speaker.”

Later in the afternoon Harry visited a technical school and a children’s hospital, meeting with patients in the burns unit. While at the hospital, Harry met with several children including one little boy who offered him a stuffed soldier toy.

His final official engagement in Nepal was a reception at the British Embassy, in which the Prince delivered a speech thanking the Nepali people for their warm hospitality and for “making it so easy” for him to show that the small nation was again open for business after last year’s earthquake.

During his speech, Prince Harry also revealed he will be staying on in Nepal for another week to help rebuild a school in Central Nepal as part of the earthquake relief effort undertaken by volunteer group Team Rubicon UK. “The people I have met and the beauty of this country make it very hard to leave. Thankfully however, I’m not leaving just yet,” he said.
