This weekend, Their Imperial Highness Princess Kiko of Akishino and her eldest daughter Princess Mako of Akishino attended the annual Japan Flower Design Award for 2016, which took place in the city of Kyoto, the former Imperial capital of Japan.
The princesses both looked serene and elegant in cream-coloured suits,  each wearing a simple pearl necklace and a diamond brooch.

Japan is renowned for its unusual and interesting floral displays, most notably in the form of Ikebana, the ancient form of flower arranging which uses traditional style and technique, along side seasonal and symbolic types of flowers.

However, the Japan Flower Design Award gave a chance for enthusiastic designers to get even more creative with an imaginative mix of modern, contemporary and downright extraordinary ideas that went way beyond a nice simple bunch of flowers!
