It is party time in most catholic communities in the world, as people are celebrating carnaval. Yesterday the sympathetic Princess Léa (or Princess Alexandre) of Belgium, sister-in-law of King Albert II, went to the town of Eupen to join the festivities. As usual she was dressed elegantly in a white coat.

Eupen celebrates carnaval since 1696. In 1884 the town started celebrating ‘Rosenmontag’ (monday of the roses), traditionally the highlight of carnaval in the carnaval tradition of the German Rheinland. The princess watched the parade of approx. 3000 people in all kinds of festive costumes and 60 trucks pass through the city.

The princess was not the only royal present. The festivities were overseen by ‘prince Carnaval’, who gets elected each year.
