The Duchess of Kent made a rare public appearance today when she paid a visit to the flood-hit cities of York and Tadcaster.

Meeting with residents and volunteers at the Merchant Adventurers’ Hall in York, the Duchess asked what they all did when the flooding began and praised the clean-up effort – which was still going on around her in the Hall, as the mud on the floor was mopped up.

Later in the day in Tadcaster, Katharine – who was born and grew up in North Yorkshire – told those she met that she was “really sad about the effect the flooding is having on the people, homes and businesses of this beautiful city and county…Wherever I have lived in the world my heart has and always will remain in the wonderful county of North Yorkshire.”

The Duchess’ visit was designed to “encourage small businesses and residents” in their recovery from the flooding.

The Duke of York is scheduled to visit the area tomorrow.
