Duke and Duchess of Cambridge Spend Day in North Wales

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge spent the day in North Wales today attending a number of engagements related to the mental health of young people in the area.

They first stopped in Caernarfon where a brief walkabout in the city’s Castle Square delighted the scores of flag-waving locals, before William and Catherine headed inside the Gisda centre to speak with people who have benefitted from the support provided by the charity, which works with homeless youth. During the visit, Prince William spoke of the personalities of his two children: “George is… well Charlotte is very calm, very —  George?” before pulling an expression that indicated his son was a lively little boy.

A photography exhibition run by Mind entitled “Mute: are you being heard?” was next on the agenda. The couple spent time looking at the photographs and artworks on show that are designed to provide an outlet for young people to discuss mental health.

William and Catherine then had lunch with representatives of the Mountain Rescue UK, who have worked with Mind to support their mental health projects and educate young people on how to recognise when others are suffering, and local high school students at the Towers Residential Outdoor Education Centre in Snowdonia National Park before they took part in an abseiling exercise. Donning red waterproof jackets, boots and helmets, the Duchess helped lower her husband down the abseiling course before having a go herself. “This is the arggghh moment,” Kate said just before she stepped backwards off the ledge to abseil down the wall.

The couple’s final engagement of the day was a visit to the Men’s Sheds project run by Mind in Vale of Clywd that offers men an environment in which they can discuss how they are feeling and take part in practical activities.
