Princess Laurentien Attends Literacy Week Opening
Today, Monday September 7, Princess Laurentien attended the launch of the 11th edition of the Literacy Week Opening in the square near the Parliament building in The Hague.
During the event, the Princess presented the “National Literacy Awards”. The winners this year were “The Maternity Bird”, a social enterprise about maternity care; the children’s comic “Look and Read” and “Language and Parental Involvement / Language and Finance Parenting”, a foundation that involves parents and elementary school students about education and language. Each winner won a sum of 2.500 euros.
Literacy Week takes place from 7 to 13 September. During this week, throughout The Netherlands, events about language literacy is organized by various organizations. The purpose of this week is to focus the attention on the importance of the literature.
On May 27, 2004, Princess Laurentien launched The Reading and Writing Foundation. In March 2009, she was appointed as Special Envoy on Literacy for UNESCO.
