Princess Hitachi’s 75th Birthday
Princess Hitachi of Japan, born Lady Hanako Tsugaru, celebrates her seventy-fifth birthday today, July 19.
The Princess is the wife of Prince Masahito, only brother of Emperor Akihito. They married in September 1964, and Prince Masahito was given the title Prince Hitachi. Masahito and Hanako do not have any children.

Alongside her husband, Princess Hitachi is one of two Imperial Representatives in the Imperial Household Council, a body which discusses and approves matters relating to the Imperial House of Japan.
She is involved with a number of charities, including the Japanese Red Cross Society, and is passionate about animal welfare. Through this interest, the Princess has translated several children’s books about animals from English into Japanese.
