Princess Charlotte is Christened

On July 5, Princess Charlotte of Cambridge, the second child and first daughter of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, was christened at St. Mary Magdalene Church in Sandringham, Norfolk. Her grandmother, the late Princess of Wales, was also christened there.

Princess Charlotte’s godparents are The Hon. Laura Fellowes, Sophie Carter, Adam Middleton, James Meade and Thomas van Straubenzee. Laura Fellowes is a niece of Charlotte’s grandmother Diana, whilst Sophie Carter is a friend of the Duchess of Cambridge. Adam Middleton is a cousin of the Duchess. James Meade is a family friend of the couple, and Thomas van Straubenzee is a friend of the Duke of Cambridge.

Princess Charlotte wore a replica of the royal christening gown, which was first worn by the Earl and Countess of Wessex’s son Viscount Severn in 2007. The original christening gown was first worn by Queen Victoria’s eldest daughter Vicky in 1841, and the last to wear it was Lady Louise Windsor, the Earl and Countess of Wessex’s daughter, in 2003. All together, there were 21 guests at the christening and Charlotte arrived in a pram that had been used by Princes Andrew and Edward when they were babies in the 1960s.

Princess Charlotte was christened by Justin Welby, the Archbishop of Canterbury, using water from the River Jordan in the Lily Font. Using water from the River Jordan is a royal tradition and most of the European royals have also been christened in the water.

Prince George of Cambridge was wearing an outfit by Rachel Riley, which bears a resemblance to the outfit Prince William wore whilst visiting his brother Prince Harry in hospital in 1984.
