200th Anniversary of Waterloo Commemorations Begin in Belgium

Commemorations marking the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Waterloo begun today in Belgium, where King Philippe and Queen Mathilde hosted a dinner for the descendants of the battle’s main commanders.

Attending were Prince Jean-Christoph Napoleon, the Marquess and Marchioness of Douro, Prince Nicolaus Blücher and his son and daughter-in-law, Prince Pieter-Christiaan of the Netherlands, and Hereditary Grand Duke Guillaume and Hereditary Grand Duchess Stéphanie of Luxembourg.

Earlier in the day, the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall were joined by the Duke and Duchess of Wellington at Ferme d’Hougoumont where the Prince unveiled a new memorial to the British soldiers who took part in the battle which led to the overthrow of French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte.

Charles and Camilla, along with the Wellingtons, were given a tour of the battlefield, including Napoleon’s headquarters at La Belle Alliance Farm.

Princess Astrid of Belgium, Prince Pieter-Christiaan, Prince Charles Napoleon and Prince Nicolaus Blücher were also present at the commemorations at Ferme d’Hougoumont, the farm where British and allied forces held off the French army.
