Swedish Royal Wedding: The Guests

Yesterday’s royal wedding in Sweden saw a number of royal ladies don evening gowns and tiaras in celebration. Typically, what the guests wore was a large discussion point, so here is a run-down of the dresses that graced the coral carpet.

Mother of the groom Queen Silvia went for a lilac sheath evening gown in silk satin, embroidered with blue lace and beading. As was expected by many a royal watcher, the Queen wore the Leuchtenberg Sapphire Tiara with the earrings and brooch from the parure and a diamond necklace.

Crown Princess Victoria continued her love affair with H&M, having a bespoke gown created from the material that was used on one of the brand’s Conscious Collection skirts.  The dress featured a full skirt and a straight neckline, in cream and olive green tones with a fern leaf print. The Crown Princess went for something new on the tiara-side of things, donning the Connaught Tiara for the first time.

Heavily pregnant Princess Madeleine also went for a bespoke version of a designer’s existing creation, in a dusty rose Elie Saab maternity gown. The bodice was covered in various sized beads and stones, while the adapted silk chiffon skirt flowed gracefully over her pregnant frame. She wore the Modern Fringe Tiara, a diamond lattice bracelet and the Vasa diamond earrings.

And the miniature Princess Leonore who attempted to escape during the coral carpet walk? She was wearing a lace dress that dates back to the 1880s, when it was worn by her great-great-grandfather Gustaf VI Adolf.

King Carl Gustaf’s four sisters, aka The Haga Princesses, stuck to their typical royal appearance attire – elegant (Princess Margaretha) and simple (Princess Christina) with a bit of colour (Princess Désirée). And then there’s Princess Birgitta, marching to the beat of her own drum in a pale pink jumpsuit and fur stole.

Belgium’s Queen Mathilde went for a simple silhouette that she knows suits her immensely.  The pale blue gown had a beaded bodice with cap sleeves and a minor sweetheart neckline paired with a flowing chiffon skirt. She wore the bandeau of the Nine Provinces Tiara and the diamond fringe brooch she inherited from Queen Fabiola.

Queen Margrethe II of Denmark (who, along with Queen Sonja brought some popping colour to the guest list, see below) recycled the red gown with a floral-embroidered bodice she wore for her 75th birthday celebrations back in April, this time wearing it with the diamond Baden Palmette Tiara.

Her daughter-in-law Crown Princess Mary went for a pale blue gown similar in colour to Queen Mathilde’s, but of an entirely different structure and material. The high-necked silk gown with a full skirt and train had a defined waistband and lace embellishment down the top half of the skirt. It was worn with the pearl version of Mary’s diamond wedding tiara.

Princess Marie was her usual self, in a mint green Alberta Ferretti frock and her diamond floral tiara. The draping of the bodice made it seem as though the dress was not properly fitted after she purchased it.

Japan’s Princess Hisako of Takamodo went for a pale green cap-sleeved gown with heavy gold beading on the centre of the bodice extending onto the entire skirt. A cape-style train began at her waist. The Princess carried a gold clutch and accessorised with a diamond and pearl parure.

Dutch Queen Máxima very rarely disappoints at royal events like these, and this wedding was no exception. She recycled the burgundy lace and beaded Jan Taminiau gown she had commissioned for the evening celebrations of her husband’s inauguration in 2013. The Queen wore the Mellerio Ruby Parure, and carried a light brown fan for practical purposes.

Queen Sonja of Norway’s Big Bird dress made it’s thousandth appearance in Stockholm. Dating back to 1997, the dress is all pleats, flounce and yellow. It was worn this time with Queen Maud’s Pearl and Diamond tiara and a major pearl necklace

Crown Princess Mette-Marit was another who stuck to what they know: her outfit in pastel pink with a Temperly floral skirt was very Mette-Marit. She accessorised with her diamond bandeau tiara and a pair of diamond and ruby earrings.

Her sister-in-law Princess Märtha Louise opted for a light grey beaded figure-hugging gown with a trumpet skirt. A tulle shawl, her diamond King Olav’s Gift Tiara and a pair of amethyst and green gemstone earrings completed the look.

The Countess of Wessex wore a pale grey evening gown with a v-neck and cap sleeves that was given to her as an official gift by Czech designer Taťána Kovaříková during her recent visit to Prague. It also features beading on the sleeves and where the bodice gathers into the waistband. Sophie wore the Collins & Sons aquamarine and diamond tiara she sports on occasion.

Princess Ursula of Bavaria, wife of the groom’s godfather Prince Leopold, wore a dark grey gown with gold floral embellishment, a diamond tiara and a pearl necklace.

Her daughter-in-law Princess Anna went for navy blue, in a dress that featured an embroidered bodice overlay and a simple skirt. She also wore a small diamond tiara from her Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg family.

Greek Princess Tatiana is another who never fails to disappoint at royal events. Her palest of pale Celia Kritharioti dress had a beaded tulle overlay, and was the perfect gown to debut a new diamond tiara with.
