Swedish Royal Wedding: The Bridal Gown
Sofia Hellqvist became HRH Princess Sofia, Duchess of Värmland today, let’s take a look at the bridal gown she chose for her big day.
The gown was designed by Ida Sjöstedt, who was widely tipped to be given the honour in the lead-up to the wedding. Made of crepe-silk with Italian double organza, it also featured a lace-covered bodice with a wide v-neckline and full-length sleeves. José María Ruiz created the lace which was cut and hand-embroidered in floral motifs along the skirt and train.
In her simple updo, Sofia wore a sprig of myrtle from the bush planted at Sofiero Castle (but now at Ulriksdal Palace) by Princess Margaret of Connaught, the grandmother of King Carl XVI Gustaf, when she married the future Gustaf VI Adolf in 1905. This follows a tradition of all the Swedish royal brides since (including the most recent brides, Victoria and Madeleine) to include myrtle from that bush (which grew from clippings of British Queen Victoria’s own myrtle bush) in their wedding attire.
Princess Sofia was gifted a diamond and emerald tiara by her new in-laws, King Carl Gustaf and Queen Silvia. It is comprised of diamond honeysuckles, each topped with a tear-drop shaped emerald. The tiara anchored a simple tulle veil with lace cotton edging.
A bouquet of large garden roses in shades of cream and coral completed the new Princess Sofia’s bridal look.
