Dutch Official Visit to the United States of America, Day 3
Today, Wednesday June 3rd, Their Majesties King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima started their third and last day in the United States with a visit at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago.
The Institute, founded in 1954, is the most important in the United States in the fields of clinical research in combination treatment of patients with physical limitations by brain injury and spinal cord injury. They also take care of veterans. During the visit the Royal Couple was informed about the latest innovations and research in rehabilitation and it was showed to them the bionic legs. In the presence of the King and the Queen was signed a memorandum of understanding between the Institution and the Dutch NeuroControl, a center of research established in 2011. There was also a symposium about healthy aging.
Afterwards the Royal Couple went to the Robert H. Lurie Medical Research Center at Northwestern University, where they were welcomed by Daniel Linzer, a molecular biologist, academic administrator and the provost of the University. It was announced during the visit that seven Dutch researchers will get a chair at the University.
The King and the Queen visited the research projects about rehabilitation devices, Alzheimer’s and cancer.
The following stop was at the Gotham Greens Rooftop Greenhouse, the largest rooftop greenhouse in America that is involved in urban agriculture projects. At their arrival they were welcomed by Viraj Puri, CEO of the Greenhouse. The last event of the state visit was at the Gwendolyn Brooks College.
King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima attended a seminar with the theme “Feeding the City Healthier Food”, at the presence of Dutch and American companies who shared experiences urban food products. The King and the Queen met the students of the College, the Principal of the College, D’Andre J. Weaver and made a tour of the school.
