Belgium’s Queen Attends Queen Elisabeth Music Contest Award Ceremony

Queen Mathilde of the Belgians today presented the prizes for the Queen Elisabeth Music Competition which this year focused on violin players.

The award ceremony took place at the Queen Elisabeth Music Chapel in Waterloo, with Lim Ji-young from South Korea taking out the International Queen Elisabeth Grand Prize – the Queen Mathilde Prize. For coming in first out of the twelve musicians who made the finals, Ms Lim was awarded 25,000€ and a four-year loan of the ‘Huggins’ Stradivarius violin.

“I never expected to win a prize. It feels unreal,” Ms Lim said after the event.

The Queen Elisabeth Music Competition was first held in 1937 after it was instituted by Queen Elisabeth in memory of her friend, Belgian musician Eugène Ysaÿe.
