Dutch State Visit to Canada, Day Three

The King and Queen of the Netherlands have completed their State Visit to Canada today, spending the day in Toronto.

First, Willem-Alexander and Maxima stopped at Queen’s Park, where at the Legislative Assembly of Ontario, they had meetings with Ontario’s Premier, Kathleen Wynne, and Lieutenant-Governor, Elizabeth Dowdeswell. Afterwards, they visited the MaRS Discovery District, a platform for companies and research labs in sciences and health, ICT and energy. King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima toured several start-ups while in the district and had lunch with representatives.

After lunch, the King spoke at the Canadian-Netherlands Resillient Cities Seminar, which brought together Dutch and Canadian businesses to discuss the problems of urbanisation and economic development of cities that are based on waterfronts. The couple also paid a quick visit to the rlands, Hans Spierings and King Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands visit the FIFA Dutch Womens National team at Monarch Park Stadium, ahead of the FIFA Women’s World Cup which is being held next week.

They then travelled across to Centre Island, where they officially unveiled seven ‘tulpi-chairs’ which have been gifted to the city by the Netherlands and are a “symbol of [the] two nations’ ongoing friendship and the history we both share” according to Toronto’s Mayor, John Tory. Queen Maxima gleefully tested one of the chairs with a large smile on her face.

The couple will pay an official visit to the United States in the coming days before returning to the Netherlands.
