British State Opening of Parliament 2015

In the House of Lords at the Palace of Westminster, the home of the British parliament, Queen Elizabeth II today attended the State Opening of Parliament, which signals the new parliamentary season.

The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh travelled from Buckingham Palace to the Palace of Westminster in the Diamond Jubilee Coach. When they arrived, the Queen swapped the George IV State Diadem for the Imperial State Crown as per tradition before entering the chambers to give the Queen’s Speech, outlining the government’s plans for the coming year.

“My government will legislate in the interests of everyone in the country. It will adopt a one nation approach, helping working people get on, supporting aspiration, giving new opportunities to the disadvantaged and bringing different parts of our country together,” Queen Elizabeth read, before stating the newly-elected Conservative government’s plans for tax cuts, home ownership and free childcare, as well as a referendum on Britain’s membership in the European Union.

The Prince of Wales, the Duchess of Cornwall and the Princess Royal also attended the opening.
