Norway’s Crown Princess Begins Literature Tour

As she did last year, Crown Princess Mette-Marit has embarked on a two-day literature tour between Trondheim and Hamar onboard a “literature train”. She is being accompanied by two authors, Tore Renberg and Harald Rosenløw Eeg, for the tour.

The tour began at the Trondheim Public Library, where the Crown Princess gave a speech explaining the theme of this year’s tour (identity) and spoke of her own love of reading. “Identity is an important theme in the literature, and for my part I read books in an attempt to get closer to my own life,” she said to the crowd, which included her mother, Marit Tjessem.

It was then aboard the literature train towards their first destination, Oppdal. Here, Mette-Marit and the two authors attended a book presentation at the local library. In Ringebu, a similar presentation was done, this time with two book critics from NRK who discussed with the Crown Princess why people read and what individuals get out of it.

The day concluded at the 20th Norwegian Literature Festival in Lillehammer. Crown Princess Mette-Marit officially opened the festival, delivering a speech that reiterated her whole message about reading: “In communion with reading and writing, we have the opportunity to be a little more ourselves, give a little more of ourselves. For what we communicate is not just literature, but snippets of our lives – for better or worse. And just that believes I can do it to live in the world with each other more easily.”
