Her Majesty the Queen of Bhutan today celebrates her twenty-fifth birthday.

Queen Jetsun Pema was born in Thimphu to Dhondup Gyaltshen and Sonam Chuki. She was educated at local schools before attending St. Joseph’s Convent in Kalimpong, India and the Lawrence School in Solan, India where she completed her secondary schooling. The Queen then majored in international relations at London’s Regent University, taking psychology and art history as minors.

In October 2011, she married the King of Bhutan, Jigme Khesar, in a ceremony in Punakha during which Jetsun Pema – described by the King as “warm and kind in heart and character” – was also crowed Queen. Public celebrations took place in Thimphu and Paro. The wedding was noted for its bright colours, traditional in Bhutan, and brought the largest ever foreign media contingent to the country.

Since her marriage, Queen Jetsun Pema has accompanied her husband for many public engagements within her country as well as abroad.
