British television network ITV has announced it will be producing an eight-hour drama series based on the early life of Queen Victoria, Britain’s longest reigning monarch to date.

Novelist Daisy Goodwin will be making her screenwriting debut in penning the script for Victoria. “I’ve been fascinated by Victoria since I started reading her diaries at university. She’s a woman whose personality leaps off the page – a tiny 4 foot 11 teenager who overnight became the most powerful woman in the world, and her candour and spirit makes for an irresistible heroine,” Ms Goodwin said in a statement release by the network.

According to ITV, the series begins in 1837, the year Queen Victoria took the throne. “This epic series is a chance to see the Victorian age through the eyes of the Queen herself for the first time,” Steve November, Director of Drama at ITV, said.

Victoria begins filming in September and is slated for international release.
