Happy 64th Birthday Princess Basma bint Talal

Princess Basma bint Talal of Jordan turns 64 years old today.

Born on May 11, 1951 in Amman, Princess Basma is the only daughter of King Talal and Queen Zein al-Sharaf Talal. She is King Hussein of Jordan’s sister and aunt to the current King, Abdullah II.

Princess Basma studied in Amman before finishing high school in England, she then attended Oxford University where she studied Modern Languages. In 2001, Princess Basma was awarded a Doctorate of Philosophy degree by Oxford University for her thesis titled “Contextualising development in Jordan: the arena of donors, state and NGOs”.

On April 2, 1970, Princess Basma married Colonel Timoor Daghistani in Amman. Together they have two children: Farah Al Daghistani born in 1971 and Ghazi Al Daghistani born in 1974. Princess Basma and Colonel Timor divorced in the late 1970’s. Princess Basma remarried to Sayyid Walid al-Kurdi in Amman on April 14, 1980. They have two children together: Saad Al Walid born in 1982 and Zein Al Sharaf Al Walid born in 1986.

Princess Basma works to promote human development, gender equality and does a lot of charity work in Jordan. Princess Basma holds various honorary degrees, has received at least 7 orders and has held various positions for UNESCO.
