The remains of Grand Duke Nicholas Nikolaevich of Russia and his wife Anastasia were reburied in Russia on April 30.

In a ceremony attended by Prince Dimitri Romanovich, the Chairman of the State Duma, the Mayor of Moscow and Patriarch Kirill of Moscow, the Grand Duke and Duchess were reinterred at the Chapel of the Transfiguration of Our Lord at the Bratsk Military Cemetery in Moscow. It was apparently the wish of Grand Duke Nicholas – who served on the main front as Commander in Chief of the Russian Imperial Army for the first years of World War One – to be buried nearby his fellow soldiers.

Since his death in 1929, the Grand Duke’s remains were buried in France, where he lived in exile from 1919 with his wife. Grand Duchess Anastasia died in 1935.

Grand Duke Nicholas was the eldest son of Grand Duke Nicholas Nikolaevich, the sixth child of Tsar Nicholas I. He entered into the military at an early age and made it his career. He married Princess Anastasia of Montenegro, daughter of King Nikola I of Montenegro, in 1907.
