Spanish King Delivers Cervantes Prize

King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia this afternoon attended the presentation of the Cervantes Prize at the University of Alcala de Henares in Madrid.

This year’s laureate is Juan Goytisolo for his collection of novels and essays. He was presented with an award of €125,000. King Felipe in his speech said that Mr Goytisolo’s work has helped to remind people that “Spain cannot ignore its mission as acting as the cultural bridge between Latin America, Europe and the Southern Mediterranean.”

The Cervantes Prize, named after Don Quixote author Miguel de Cervantes, is one of Spain’s most prestigious literary awards, and has been presented annually since 1976 to an outstanding writer who has contributed significantly to the literary history of the Spanish language.
