Queen Maxima In Washington

In her role as special advocate of the UN Secretary General for Inclusive Finance for Development, Queen Maxima took part in one of the spring meetings held by the World Bank Group and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in Washington D.C. on April 16 and 17.

On Friday April 17, Queen Maxima attended the seminar “Universal Financial Access 2020: Towards the Last Mile” along with the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, World Bank President Jim Kim, MasterCard CEO Ajay Banga, and other leaders. One of the themes of the seminar was how to promote financial inclusion and achieve universal financial access by the year 2020. The goal is to arrive in 2020 at the access to a transaction account or an electronic instrument to store money, send and receive payments for the adults worldwide.

The Queen stressed many times, that the access to the financial services is important to help poor people to afford social services. During the seminar  a presentation took place where the new edition of the “The Little Data Book on Financial Inclusion”. It’s a triennal publication of the Global Financial Inclusion (Global Findex) which is the world’s most comprehensive database on financial inclusion funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The Queen wrote the foreword of the publication.

In Washington, Queen Maxima also held meetings with government representatives, governors of central banks, and supervisors from different countries.

Queen Maxima was appointed in September 2009 Special advocate of Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon of the United Nations. Since June 2011 Queen Máxima has been Honorary Chair of the G20 Global Partnership for Financial Inclusion (GPFI).
