Queen Margrethe’s 75th Birthday: Balcony Appearance & Town Hall Reception
Queen Margrethe II of Denmark turns 75 today, and has been celebrated with a series of events in Copenhagen.
After being woken by her family and a few close friends singing underneath her bedroom window at Fredensborg Palace, the Queen headed into the capital for the festivities. She and her immediate family – sons Frederik and Joachim with their wives and children – appeared on the main balconies of Christian VII’s Palace to greet the thousands of well-wishers who filled Amalienborg Palace Square. A series of nine ‘hurrahs’ for the birthday girl rang through the crowd.
As usual, the children were the ones who enjoyed the balcony appearance the most – Princes Nikolai and Felix pulled out their iPhones to film, Princess Isabella tapped along to the beat of the Lifeguards band, Prince Henrik had to be convinced to go back inside, and Prince Vincent, well, he almost went over the railing!
The Queen’s sisters and the foreign royals still in Copenhagen and attending today’s events – Princess Benedikte, King Constantine and Queen Anne-Marie of Greece, the King and Queen and Crown Princess Couple of Sweden, the King and Crown Prince Couple of Norway – also got to watch the show from other balconies.
Unfortunately, Prince Henrik has not yet recovered enough to attend his wife’s celebrations as was announced earlier this week. Thus, the Queen was joined by Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary for the carriage procession through the streets of Copenhagen to the Town Hall.
At the Town Hall, the Queen was greeted by the Mayor of Copenhagen, Frank Jensen. Inside, a dance performance was given by Uppercut Dance Theatre and Dansk Dance Theatre accompanied by music by a number of school and youth choirs. The Mayor hosted a luncheon for the Queen afterwards, where both he and the Queen delivered speeches.
An official dinner will take place this evening. We’ll be covering the fashions of the royal ladies – both day and night – later on!
