Remains of Richard III Arrive at Leicester Cathedral

The remains of the last Plantagenet and York King have arrived at Leicester Cathedral, where they will be buried in a ceremony on Thursday.

A ceremony took place at the University of Leicester before the coffin was taken through the Leicester and a several places in the area which were important to the final days of Richard III’s life. People who had worked to find and identify the King’s remains, those who organised the reburial and descendants of the King’s family were present for the departure, and place white roses on top of the English oak coffin.

Short services took place at Fenn Lane Farm, Bosworth Battlefield Heritage Centre, the St Nicholas Church, and at Bow Bridge. During the service at the heritage centre, re-enacters gave the site a medieval feel, and a 21-gun salute took place. Thousands of people lined the route of the procession.

The Duke of Gloucester was present at Leicester Cathedral alongside Dean David Monteith and the Bishop of Leicester, Tim Stevens, to receive the King’s coffin.

Richard III’s remains were found buried underneath a carpark in Leicester in 2012.
